Police deal with mob justice

AmaZulu and Maritzburg United host Platinum Stars and Celtic

People in various parts of the province have been dealing with suspects violently, as well as torching the houses of those suspected of being involved in witchcraft. Police detained 32 Dundee residents including eight juveniles for public violence after they attacked a family house in France area in northern KwaZulu-Natal, accusing its owners of killing people and mutilating them.

Police were called in to cool the situation down but the community stoned police vehicles. Four police vehicles were stoned and three officers hurt. The group chanting for the blood of a man known as "Skebhe" accused him of harvesting body parts. Police used rubber bullets in an attempt to break up the crowd. Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Vincent Mdunge said police detained 32 people including eight juveniles for public violence. He said a group of people had attacked a house in France area and tried to murder a man they accused of killing people in the area. "The group started throwing stones at the house and damaged it," Mdunge said.

Kwazulu-Natal soccer fans will have a difficult choice this weekend when two local teams - AmaZulu and Maritzburg United - host Platinum Stars and Bloemfontein Celtic, respectively, tomorrow. Usuthu, who are 11th on the Absa Premiership log, will face Stars at Moses Mabhida Stadium (3.30pm), while the 14th-placed Team of Choice host Celtic at Harry Gwala Stadium (8.15pm).

Both sides desperately need a win to move away from the danger zone. Usuthu's fortunes seem to have improved as they have not lost a game in their past three matches. But the same cannot be said of United, who have been able to register only one point in the past three matches and team captain Shu-aib Walters knows that they have to start earning points. United's problem has been their poor defence. "If you look at the goals we've let in, many of them are silly mistakes, things that can be rectified and we are doing just that," Walters said. Wits spokesperson George Mogotsi says the non-appearance of suspended captain Tefu Mashamaite will not stop them from defeating Vasco da Gama, whom they host at Milpark on Sunday at 3.30pm. The Students are in high spirits after their 2-1 victory over Super Sport United in midweek.
