Wolmaransstad – On Sunday 24 November, 67-year old farmer Schalk van der Merwe and his wife Lettie, were approached by five suspects pretending to buy sheep on their farm.

The couple was overpowered, and Lettie was forced into the house. She was assaulted and threatened with a firearm to hand over the keys to the safe.

The farmer’s 43-year old son was returning to the house when he saw people running from the premises and realised something was wrong.

According to police spokesperson colonel Adéle Myburgh, he discovered his father in the sheep kraal, tied-up and murdered with a sharp instrument. He found his mother inside the house, severely traumatised and badly assaulted.

The five suspected murderers, two females and three males, fled the scene in a white Toyota bakkie with three stolen firearms and an undisclosed amount of cash.

If you have any information about this farm murder, please contact your nearest police station or the Wolmaransstad branch commander, lieutenant colonel Thapelo Madito on 082 416 3621. The public is cautioned to not confront these suspects, as they are regarded as armed and dangerous.
