NW – During a farm attack spree in the North West
Province over the past week which includes at least
three attacks; two farmers lost their lives and others
were seriously injured.
The Platinum Weekly received information of three serious
farm attacks. The 1st attack, in which a farmer
was brutally murdered, occurred in Ventersdorp on the
Saturday the 14th of January 2012. The second attack,
in which the farmer died as a result of his injuries while
hospitalised, occurred on a farm between Koster& Rustenburg on Monday 16th January 2012. The very
next day, the 3rd attack occurred in Delareyville, between
Klerksdorp & Vryburg, during which one of the
attackers, ambushed by the SAPS, took his own life, by
shooting himself in the head.
Ventersdorp – During the early morning hours of
Saturday (14 January 2012), a Ventersdorp farmer
was killed and his wife was seriously injured. The late
56-year-old Dries du Toit of the Klipplaatdrif farm, his
wife Lettie du Toit and his sister Elizabeth de Villiers
were overpowered at around 4h10 after the suspects
forcefully opened a door of their farmhouse.
Mr. du Toit died on scene after he and his wife was savagely
attacked with a piece of iron. Mrs. Du Toit sustained
a broken rib, serious head wounds and some of
her teeth were also broken during the attack. Mrs de
Villiers was tied up and only sustained minor injuries.
The five suspects fled with thousands of rands worth of
stolen property.
There are numerous rumours and allegations doing the
rounds about very suspicious activities at the Du Toit’s
farm – only days before the attack occurred. It is said
that four people, identifying themselves as policemen,
tried to gain access to the Du Toit’s house “to investigate
the theft of a petrol tanker”. Mrs Du Toit denied
them access. However, a few days after their initial visit,
another police officer known to Mrs. Du Toit, visited
again. According to the information that was given to
the SAPS, this police officer confirmed with mrs. du Toit
that there is an investigation involving a stolen petrol
tanker. |

The du Toits have two daughters, both studying
at the University of Pretoria. During the attack on their
parents they were visiting friends in Ventersdorp.
According to Captain Adéle Myburgh, there was no
case opened by Mrs. Du Toit to confirm these allegations.
During a telephonic interview with the Platinum
Weekly she also confirmed that, to her knowledge, no
docket was opened involving the theft of a petrol tanker.
Furthermore, according to Myburgh all leads are being
followed up and arrests are expected soon. She added
that the investigation is currently critically sensitive, and
that the SAPS cannot divulge any other information, as
it might be damaging to the investigations.
Rustenburg – The late 71-year-old Mr. Koos Bisschoff,
who was attacked on his farm Mooihoek, between
Rustenburg and Koster, sadly passed away the following
day, due to the severity of his injuries. During this
attack there were also 5 suspects involved.
After ransacking the house they fled with an undisclosed
amount of money, a revolver (gun) and the double
cab Mazda drifter of Mr. Bisschoff. The vehicle was
later recovered at an informal settlement in Brits.
Delareyville – An armed robber killed himself and three
other robbers were arrested after holding up the farm
shop of the Wilgevlei Farm near Delareyville at around
9h00, Tuesday morning (17 Jan 2012). Captain Tselane
Nkala said six men stole three guns from the shop's
safe during the robbery.
“The police who were hot on their heels, found the robbers
hiding in [nearby] bushes,” Nkala said. “One of the
men had a gun and he shot himself in the head before
the police could arrest him. They managed to catch
three of the suspects, two got away.” The suspects are
believed to be aged between 25-33 years. |
