Tlhabane/Rustenburg – In a series of events similar to a Hollywood action movie scene, a group of 10 armed robbers bombed two ATMs in Tlhabane before escaping with an undisclosed amount of cash on Thursday, 2 February 2012 at around 03h00.
Not even the presence of the police – who arrived at the scene within minutes in reaction to the loud explosion – could stop the 10-man gang. They immediately opened fire before they fled the scene in a white bakkie (registration number: CFD 644 GP). The gang then abandoned their getaway car near the Eskom offices in Tlhabane before getting into a Toyota Quantum minibus that did not have any registration number plates. |

“Preliminary investigations have revealed that the abandoned bakkie was reported stolen the previous day, in Soweto, Gauteng,” Brigadier Thulani Ngubane of SAPS said.
The suspects fled with the undisclosed amount of money after the ATM machines were damaged as a result of the explosion. Investigations are underway. No one was injured and no arrests have been made yet,” he added.
