Bethlehem Dumpsite closed permanently
Rustenburg – Earlier this week, 30 January 2017, the Rustenburg Local Municipality announced that the Waste Drop-off Centre situated at Bethlehem Drive (Waste Management Depot) will be closed as of 31 January 2017.
However, recent reports of robberies and damage to private vehicles have made it impossible for most members of the public to use the ‘old’ dumpsite on the R510 (past the prison).
“As of 1 February 2017, all members of the public who wish to dispose of rubbish (legally) will now be redirected to the new Waterval landfill site,” Thapelo Matebesi, municipal spokesperson, said.
The new site is situated along the Bleskop road and officially opens from 1 February 2017.
The new facility has been earmarked for some time and features security guards posted at the entrance and weighbridge. However, the lack of security inside the new premises has already caused several Platinum Weekly readers to describe it as “very dangerous”. With road conditions in and out of the dumpsite describe as ‘a muddy nightmare’ and ‘only suitable for large 4x4’s and tractors’.
The Weigh Bridge is of importance as the office of the Municipal Manager has announced that, “The disposal of waste at Waterval landfill site will be charged depending on the volumes of waste disposed.”
The disposal tariffs will not apply to residents disposing of less than 1 ton of waste per month. In other words, residents who wish to dispose of more than one ton of rubbish (or one decent bakkie load) per month will now have to pay for the opportunity to dump their rubbish.
