Rustenburg – “A minor incident took place at Impala 20 Shaft on Thursday, 9 February 2017, involving shop stewards and union members. Shop stewards arranged to speak to their members at 20 Shaft before the morning shift started.

Regrettably, during this process, some union members reportedly became dismayed with the process/ message which resulted in a physical confrontation between some union members and shop stewards,” Aimee de Bruyn, company spokesperson said.

The situation was however quickly brought under control by mine security after which workers resumed their normal duties.

There was no damage to mine property. Regrettably, some of the union leaders’ sustained minor injuries and two vehicles were damaged.

“A full investigation into the incident is currently underway and based on the outcomes of this investigation by senior mine and union personnel, disciplinary action might be instituted against individuals and/or groups of people implicated in misconduct,” De Bruyn added.
