Rustenburg – All birders and ‘want-to-be-birders’ are invited to BirdLife Rustenburg’s monthly meeting that will take place on Monday 16 July at the Methodist Church on the corner of Brink and Schuurman Streets.

Dust off your bird books and come armed with birding ‘apps’ as it is once again time for the annual, popular Brink Jordaan Birding Quiz. This is an opportunity to show off your birding knowledge – but if you feel a bit intimidated by the other bird enthusiasts, you are welcome to just enjoy the evening with us and learn from the others.

To finish off the evening you are welcome to join us for a warm bowl of soup and home-baked bread. A charge of R20 from non-members is payable.

This month also sees the winter census of all water birds at Rockwall and Olifantsnek Dams. This forms part of the national coordinated waterbird annual count (CWAC) initiative of Birdlife South Africa. This project was launched in 1992 and the objective is to monitor South Africa's waterbird populations and the conditions of the wetlands which are important for waterbirds.

This is being done by means of a programme of regular mid-summer and mid-winter censuses at many South African wetlands and estuaries. CWAC currently monitors over 350 wetlands around the country and local bird clubs – like BirdLife Rustenburg – assist with this.

It takes place on Saturday 21 July and should be a very interesting and productive outing.  Please meet at the BP Waterfall Mall at 07h00 should you wish to take part in this outing. We plan to be back in town at about 13h00.  Bring your own refreshments and snacks!

Feel free to contact our chairperson, Shaun McGillewie, on 083-702 1462 should you wish to learn more about BirdLife Rustenburg and would like to attend our events. Also, if you need help with identification of a bird – a picture will help.
