Rustenburg/ Moedwil – The Rustenburg community is mourning the death of well-known member of the community and high school teacher, Michiel Kruger who was murdered on his farm in Moedwil outside Rustenburg.

The attack reportedly happened at around 03:00 on the morning of Tuesday 30 October when three armed gunmen attacked Michiel and his elderly mother, Asta Kruger (80).

The murderers gained access to the house through a window and shot Michiel in his bed. He was shot three times; twice in the chest and once in the hand.

The attacker also restrained Mrs Kruger to the bed and threatened to kill her if she raised alarm.
Neighbours who frequently check up on Michiel and his mother, suspected something was wrong when they couldn’t reach the Krugers and alerted the police. Upon going to print, the only items reported missing were two cell phones.

Michiel was an Afrikaans teacher at Zinniaville High School and a management member of the Marico Bosveld branch of the South African Hunters and Game Conservation Association.

In Zinniaville High School’s condolence letter they said: “Mr Kruger answered his calling of being a teacher by dedicating himself to his work and educating the children in his classroom. He travelled daily from Moedwil to Zinniaville, over 30km, whatever the circumstances, to ensure that he is at school on time.

Mr Kruger will be remembered for his jovial attitude and boisterous laughter. Mr Kruger will be sorely missed for his positive contribution to the teaching and learning fraternity. We would like to extend our heartfelt sympathies to his family and friends. May his soul rest in peace.”

No arrests have been made and a case of house robbery and murder are being investigated.
We extend our heartfelt condolence to Michiel’s mother Asta, Michiel’s friends, family and colleagues.
