Rustenburg – The country is in mourning after a concrete walkway at Hoërskool Driehoek in Vanderbijlpark, connecting two sections collapsed, crushing pupils.


Three learners died on scene while a fourth succumbed to his injuries died later in hospital. Numerous learners sustained serious injuries while one student was left paralysed.


The incident occured on Friday 1 February, a few minutes after 08:00 as pupils were heading to their classrooms after the morning assembly.


Support groups and counsellors have been deployed to the school to support those affected.
This horrifying incident touched the hearts of ordinary South Africans - with millions of condolence messages flooding social media, and monetary and other contributions are being made.

 
In Rustenburg, local schools – especially Laerskool Dawid Brink – are joining the initiative to unite by wearing yellow and purple ribbons to show their solidarity. 


Yellow and purple are the school colours of Hoërskool Driehoek. 
We extend our sincerest condolences to the friends and families of the four learners who passed away: Roydon Olckers (17), Jandre Steyn (13), Marli Curry (13), and Marnus Nagel (16).
