Farm attacker in custody
Mooinooi/ Barnardsvlei – Police arrested a 23-year old foreigner, Jan Mawai, for his part in the brutal attack on 88-year old Nic Pienaar.
In the Platinum Weekly issue of 22 March, it was reported that Nic and his life partner, 59-year old Jessie Lewis, residing in Barnardsvlei near Mooinooi, was brutally attacked on their small holding.
According to police spokesperson captain Elsabé Augoustides, Nic was overpowered by four men as he let his dogs outside.
Nic was severely assaulted with a hammer.
Solar panels, a grass cutter, motorbike and a .222 hunting rifle were stolen. The motorbike was found abandoned about 2km front the small holding. Another few kilometres further, a white Toyota bakkie, presumably the property of the suspects, was later found abandoned and seized.
Within two weeks, members of the Rustenburg Cluster Task Team made a breakthrough. Jan, who had previously worked on an adjacent farm, was spotted by a farmer in the Rhenosterfontein area.
Upon closer investigation, the .222 hunting rifle was found in the possession of the suspect, together with five live rounds of ammunition and one discharged round.
The suspect appeared before court on 31 March and the case was remanded until 1 April. The case was again postponed to 16 May and bail was opposed. The remaining three suspects are currently still at large.
