BirdLife Rustenburg’s March meeting will be held, as usual, at the Rustenburg Methodist Church, c/o Brink and Schuurman streets, commencing at 19h00 on Monday, 20 March 2017.

The subject this month will be Bird Vocalization and they are indeed fortunate to welcome Melissa Whitecross, from BirdLife SA, as their guest speaker.

Melissa works for BLSA and also is a part-time lecturer at Wits University. She has a series of lectures from the second year Introduction to the Biology of Birds of Southern Africa, which she teaches. Melissa will be talking on Bird Vocalization: deciphering the song.

Bird song is the background noises to many a journey. This talk will explore different aspects of bird song from anatomy, genetics, and the use of bird calls and the mysterious world of mimicry. This is a meeting not to be missed.

Everyone are welcome with a charge of R20.00 for non-paid up members. Tea and snacks will be served. For more information please contact Shaun McGillewie on 083-702 1462.

BirdLife Rustenburg’s March outing takes the form of a long weekend in Wakkerstroom. This will be from 23-26 March 2017. We will be staying at the BirdLife SA facility – camping or dormitory.

On the Saturday, 25 March, they will have the services of Lucky who is one of, if not, the top bird guide in South Africa. This area consists of many differing habitats and a fantastic array of birds.

Should you be interested, there is still space, contact Helen Badenhorst on 083-621 1808.

As an alternative, a little closer to home, Shaun will be leading a local Saturday morning outing. The venue is still to be finalised and should you be interested in joining him, please contact Shaun directly on 083 702 1462.
