Rustenburg – Boikagong Secondary School is situated in Paardekraal outside Rustenburg. The school educates about 1,230 learners from neighbouring villages and about 80% to 90% of the homes depend on government grants.

Most learners are either orphans or have a single unemployed parent. For most of these children, school shoes are a necessity that they simply cannot afford.

After Lindiwe Mokotjo heard the plight of learners for school shoes, she decided to jump into action and help.

To raise funds for this cause, Lindiwe entered the Sunrise to Sunset 100km Magalies Biosphere Woman’s Walk, a challenging journey where she had to walk 100km over the course of four days.
Through her determination, Lindiwe managed to collect about 60 pairs of shoes and handed them over to learners of Boikagong Secondary School on Monday 20 May.

In an interview with Platinum Weekly Lindiwe said: “According to research, children from disadvantaged backgrounds are likely to drop out of school and consequently join a life of crime or to be dependant on government grants for the rest of their lives.

I want to help to end the cycle of poverty through education by assisting learners to walk to school with dignity.”

Lindiwe is already busy training for the walk in 2020 where she hopes to raise more money and awareness towards this cause.
