Rustenburg – An armed robbery incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning, 16 March 2017, at the Waterfall Mall at approximately 02h00-03h00.

When two vehicles approached the mall, the security guards reacted immediately and called it in.

The armed robbers, driving an X5 BMW and a light delivery vehicle, gained access to the mall via Placecol’s shopfront, and thereafter broke into Incredible Connection and the Scoin Shop. The intruders were in the process of setting up explosives at the Tower Foreign Exchange when the police arrived. They fled the scene empty-handed after a shootout ensued.

One of the Fidelity guards was assaulted during the incident, but was not severely injured.

“We would like to inform patrons that Waterfall Mall’s safety procedure was followed by the security. An investigation by the police is underway and the mall is giving them full support,” Jessica Varty, marketing manager of the Waterfall Mall, said.

“The safety of our tenants and shoppers is our top priority and we have extensive security procedures in place at Waterfall Mall.” she added.

At this time, the number of suspects is unclear.

“No arrests have been made, but the police investigations continue,” Sergeant Ofentse Mokgadi said.
