Rustenburg – Zinniaville Secondary School embarked on a fundraising program to develop infrastructure that would benefit their learners. The mastermind behind this initiative, of building an all-weather assembly area, was Ms Farzana Suliman, deputy principal of Zinniaville Secondary School.

In order to raise the much needed funds to build the Assembly area, the school hosted a gala dinner on Saturday, 11 March 2017. The dinner formed part of the Quality Learning and Teaching Campaign, whereby all the Alumni of Zinniaville Secondary School gathered to celebrate this momentous occasion of ex-students, ex-SGB members, ex-teachers and ex-principals. A special honour was dedicated to the Late Mr O.F. Motara.

Mr Motara was one of our principals during rather difficult times and visibly instrumental in changing the face of our school to a modern day liberated people’s school. He also ensured that the performance bar of the school be raised substantially.

Preparations for such a huge function took many long and arduous hours with committee members attending meetings every week. Careful planning was set in motion from the first week of school reopening. Committee members were given various tasks as well as the difficult task of ensuring that on the day of the event everything went according to plan.

A few members from the staff went around Rustenburg and even as far as Johannesburg, Swartruggens and Koster selling tickets to the event. Businesses and community members as well as ex-students humbly contributed towards this initiative.

The entire family of the late Mr Motara was invited to share in the evening’s proceedings. Dr Feroza Motara (eldest daughter) and Dr. Riaz Motara (Cardiologist) were the guest speakers for the evening. Dr Feroza paid a special tribute to her father in a most moving speech. Amongst the guests attending were many co-workers and ex-students of the late Mr Motara who remembered the role he played in their lives and were clearly touched by Dr Feroza’s speech.

Dr. Riaz Motara a well-known cardiologist and eldest son of the late Mr Motara, spoke about the heart from the heart. “A Walk down Memory Lane” power-point presentation depicting the school’s history and the role of the late Mr Motara in taking Zinniaville Secondary School to a school of excellence was highlighted. Current events under the leadership of the current principal, Mr S. Abdull, were also showcased.

Thank you to all our patrons, alumni members, community members, business associates and the Motara family for making our event a huge success!
