Swartruggens – History enthusiasts gathered at the Elandsrivier Museum on Saturday 17 August for the unveiling of a memorial, commemorating the animals that died during the Anglo Boer war.

John and Irma Pennyfather, who spearheaded this project unveiled the shrine.

“Irma shares my love of history, so I brought her to the museum. I remember her looking at all the mementos of the war and the fallen soldiers and asking me ‘what about the animals?’.

She was the inspiration behind this project.” John said.

Veterinarian Jan Myburg told various stories about animals during the war and tales about extraordinary animals.

The event ended on a very special note when they played The last parade. Two riders came galloping in on horses and attendees held a moment of silence for the fallen animals.

Thank you to everyone who assisted in making this day a success.

John Pennyfather received a copy of the book The siege of Elandsrivier, battle guide for history researcher Peet Coetzee.
