Rustenburg/ Phokeng – On Friday 25 October the ninth edition of the Royal Bafokeng Junior National Basketball Association (NBA) finals tipped off. 


Attendees included: King of the Royal Bafokeng Nation Kgosi Leruo Molotlegi; FIBA Africa president and Basketball Africa League chairman of the board Anibal Manave; Rwandan Basketball Federation president Desire Mugwiz; two-time NBA champion with the Los Angeles Lakers Didier Mbenga; WNBA and Mozambique legend Clarisse Machanguana; Toronto Raptors director of global scouting and international affairs Patrick Engelbrecht; and NBA Africa managing director and Basketball Africa League president, Amadou Gallo Fall.


On Friday evening a glitzy gala dinner was held at the Royal Marang Hotel in Phokeng to celebrate and recognise students, coaches, teachers and parents. 


On Saturday 26 October, scores of basketball fans made their way to the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace for the Royal Bafokeng Junior NBA league finals. The winning teams of the event were Ramotse Primary Girls, Mafenya Boys Primary School, Molotlegi Secondary School Girls, Kitsong Boys Middle Schools, Molotlegi Secondary School Girls – and Kitsong Boys High School who was crowned as the 2019 Royal Bafokeng champions.


Since its inception in 2010, the annual basketball tournament has grown into a crowd-favourite and has helped create a keen interest in the sport.
