Rustenburg – The Rustenburg Local Municipality (RLM), noted concerns with recent developments relating to the construction of the Rustenburg Mall development project valued at R650 million in Geelhout Park, and has severed ties with the developers.

It had become clear that the project’s intention was not to empower door-step communities where the project is being implemented, especially the SMMEs in the wards which have the experience and capacity to participate in this project as smaller contractors.

The RLM initially pledged its support to the project on the basis that, the Rustenburg Mall development project would contribute to the municipality’s standing position on local economic development, as it relates to SMMEs that are located in the immediate wards, where the project is being implemented.

The municipality condemns the use of the courts by the developer as a mechanism of conflict resolution by bullying affected communities into agreeing to their offer, without any negotiation which will ensure that all parties reach a settlement.

The RLM cannot be excited from this mega project - communities are set to benefit around the tune of R5 million. The municipality, after careful consideration will not be an active participant and therefore dissociates itself from the mall development project, as recent developments seek to undermine and exploit the affected communities.
