Rustenburg – A 15-year old teenager of the city has been swept away by raging water of the canal in the vicinity of Tlhabane West, during flash floods on Saturday, 7 January 2017, Captain Elsabé Augoustides, police spokesperson reported. His friend braved the water and managed to alert the Department of Public Safety.

Rescue personnel, members of the Disaster Management, Public Safety and the K9 Unit of the Rustenburg Police was deployed at the scene. The exhausted and traumatized teenager was transported to the Tlhabane Clinic. deploy

The swift action of the officials, whom immediately summoned assistance from the K9 SAPS Unit, rescue personnel from the Fire Brigade as well as Disaster Management, were instrumental in saving the teenager’s life. He was washed downstream past the Ferncrest Hospital, as far as the Rustenburg golf course.

“Eventually, near the taxi rank in Foord Street, the young teenager managed to hold on to a pole which was extended to him, and was pulled from the raging water,” Captain Augoustides said in an interview with the Platinum Weekly newspaper.
