Rustenburg – With vehicles being stolen and people being hijacked at an alarming rate, motorists must do whatever they can to prevent becoming victims.

Police spokesperson captain Elsabé Augoustides shared the following tips on how to prevent being hijacked:

  • Make sure that your vehicle is well maintained so that you are not left stranded next to the road.
  • Always inform your family or friends of your whereabouts.
  • Be aware of your surroundings at all times.
  • Be alert and attentive – do not be distracted by strangers.
  • Rather use outside parking than basement parking.
  • Report suspicious-looking vehicles and persons.
  • Do not acquaint strangers on social media and set up meetings in isolated areas.
  • Do not leave valuables in unattended vehicles as it will attract negative attention.
  • Make sure that your vehicle is locked before you walk away, also physically check your doors.
  • Ensure that the boot is always locked.
  • Avoid driving alone late at night or in unfamiliar areas.
  • Never pick up strangers.
  • Park in central, well-lit areas – preferably areas where security guards are on duty.
  • Always check your rear-view mirror to see if someone is following you. If you notice suspicious activity drive to your nearest police station.
  • Don’t drive with your windows open or your doors unlocked.
  • Ensure that your vehicle’s tracker is activated.
