Brits – Education activist Hendrick Makaneta condemned the stabbing of a female teacher at Tshefoge Primary School near Jericho outside Brits on Monday 3 May. The 47-year-old teacher was allegedly stabbed by her 63-year-old boyfriend – who is also a teacher at a nearby school - in full view of several learners.
Makaneta is quoted saying, “Government must take drastic measures to ensure that teachers, school personnel, and learners be safe at all times”.
“Schools are supposed to be a safe haven. School governing bodies and personnel must ensure that strangers not enter school grounds,” Makaneta added. However, her boyfriend is not a stranger, so how could it be prevented.
Her attacker was overpowered by colleagues and community members and she was rushed to hospital.
At the time of going to print, the teacher was still in a critical condition in the intensive care unit. The learners are receiving trauma counselling.
