Lefaragatlhe/ Rustenburg – A herdsman was shot and killed in Serutube village near Rustenburg on Thursday 4 November during a cattle robbery incident. 

A manhunt launched by Phokeng Detectives and Stock Theft Unit immediately after the incident, led to the recovery of 21 cattle in the Lefaragatlhe village.

Eleven of these cattle were positively identified and linked with the incident. At the site police also discovered two cows and calves that had been stolen a week ago in Serutube.

Refilwe Tau (45) and her son Kgalalelo Tau (18) were arrested and charged for the possession of stolen livestock.  

At their first court appearance before the Bafokeng Magistrates’ Court, they were each granted R2,000 bail and are expected back in the court on Monday 20 December. 

It is alleged that on 4 November at around 17:00 three men were herding cattle in Serutube village when the three men emerged from the bushes. 

“The trio caught one of the herdsmen and tied his hands with a rope. They robbed him of his money and a cell phone.

The suspects went to another herdsman (25) and tied his hands and robbed him of his cell phone and cash,” police spokesperson captain Aafje Botma said.   

“The suspects then demanded the cattle and shot and killed the 25-year-old. They also assaulted his colleagues with the butt of a firearm. The suspects then drove out a herd of cattle from the cattle post,” Botma explained. 

Some of the 21 cattle that were recovered in the Lefaragatlhe village.
