[Letter to the editor]
I am part of the local Community Policing Forum (CPF) and freely give up my time to protect my community and I often face dangerous sitiuations when coming to the aid of those in need.

Violance took its toll during the early morning hours at a tavern in the Redirile location, Derby, on Sunday 24 April. My first call to the Koster Police station was around 02:53 when I informed them that things were starting to get out of hand at the tavern with drunk people fighting.

I phoned again at 03:06 and at 03:07. By 04:12 I phoned again and the person on the line told me that they haven’t received any complaints from anyone in Derby. I told the person that, that couldn’t be possible, we are really struggling and we need assistance that is why I phoned multiple times. The person started to get rude towards me and I dropped the call.

At around 05:00 we received a call on our community forum that a woman was killed.

Inspite of the fact that the police did not come to our aid, the root of the violence and crime in Redirile, Derby, is the local taverns. They stay open much later that they are permitted to do and they give alcohol to people who already had too much to drink. This is not the first time people were injured or murdered in the early hours of the morning because of alchol flowing.

Drugs are also an ongoing concern in our location and these two evils are gripping our community in their violent claws. Unfortuantly we cannot fight against this without the assistance from the police. Due to their inaction criminals know that they can get away with their crimes and it draws more and more bad people to our area.

Our communtiy is suffering and we need the police to remove these people from our town, and to get the taverns to comply.
