Rustenburg – Thirteen members of BirdLife Rustenburg took a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Prince Edward Islands during the Flock to Marion 2022 arranged by BirdLife South Africa in January 2022.

When the MSC Orchestra neared the Prince Edwards Island, the sky was full of seabirds and the number and diversity was mind-blowing.

For much of the day the ship was accompanied by dozens of Wandering Albatrosses, tens of Sooty Albatrosses, and other sought-after species such as Light Mantled and Grey-headed Albatrosses as well as Grey-backed Storm Petrels, Blue Petrels and hundreds of other seabirds.

Closer to home, on Saturday 21 May, BirdLife Rustenburg will host a self-drive outing to Pilanesberg National Park. Members will meet at the Bakubung Gate at 06:30. Please confirm with Helen Badenhorst (on 083 621 1808) if you will be joining the outing.

Gate entrance is R40 per vehicle, R80 for adults and R40 for pensioners – children 11 years and younger pay only R30. The route will depend on road conditions. Please bring your own refreshments and a picnic lunch.

Feel free to contact our chairperson, Shaun McGillewie, on 083 702 1462 should you wish to learn more about BirdLife Rustenburg.
