Rustenburg – “Two taxis were set alight at Thembelani Mine on Friday 13 May,” said chairperson of Bojanala 1 regional taxi association, June Motloung.
The incident apparently occurred after certain taxi operators had allegedly beaten up three mineworkers for taking away their business by ferrying passengers using their vehicles.
Motloung added: “The patrol team noticed a car loading passengers in their area and they organised a meeting with the local community to discuss the issue.
During the meeting that Friday, they received a call informing them that their taxis were torched.”
Members of Bleskop Taxi Association, who were affected by the incident, have been engaged in further meetings with the community and other stakeholders with a view of resolving the issue.
