Rustenburg – After playing a few games for the Impala Rugby Club’s first team, Andy Huysamen is settling in well and proving why coach Joel Scherman has a lot of faith in his capabilities.

Huysamen – who recently moved from Cape Town to Rustenburg – is part of Scherman’s plans to bolster the team with as many good players as possible in anticipation of the prestigious Gold Cup later this year.

The 29-year-old bulky player, who started playing the sport at the tender age of six, attended Elswood Primary School in Cape Town where he made a name for himself as a hooker.

“I loved the sport from the word go. Later on, I switched positions from hooker to flank,” Huysamen told Platinum Weekly.

At high school, Huysamen was faced with a dilemma. He qualified for both the Western Province rugby and cricket teams. “I eventually chose rugby because of my small stature. And I’ve never looked back.” Huysamen later also played for the u/19 provincial team.

Equally comfortable while playing at flyhalf (10) or inside centre (12), Huysamen is passionate about helping Impala Rugby Club to become a more competitive and aggressive outfit.

“I enjoy my time here in Rustenburg. Hopefully, I will be able to secure a job soon. However, for now, I am focused on delivering quality rugby and to perform to the best of my ability. I also want to help the younger players and I believe if we manage to stick to our game plan, we can be a better team,” he said.
