Rustenburg – Grenville High School will host the Bojanala Chess Federation Clash of Schools on Saturday 23 July.

The Clash of Schools tournament is a temporary alternative to the Bojanala Schools Chess League.
It’s a one-day tournament, divided into two leagues being, Premier and Development.

Schools will therefore not be expected to visit other schools in home-and-away matches, as is standard in a sporting league. All school matches will be rated by Chess SA.

Schools have already started boasting with their top players. In the build-up to the tournament, Bojanala Chess Federation will showcase these young talents:

  • Meridian Rustenburg

Meridian’s Diteboho Mofokeng played a couple of chess games in 2017 and only picked up a pawn again in 2022. The 16-year-old started this year with a Chess SA rating of 587. He is a 1,037-rated player now! He is clearly a newbie to be reckoned  with.

  • Assembly of God Christian School (AOC)

The10-year-old Blessing Tshetlhe will lead AOC into battle in true David versus Goliath style. His peers say he has the sling. Just bring on the giants!

  • Laerskool Proteapark

Parkies is currently the defending champions of the Bojanala Primary School chess league. They come with different layers of champions.

Their defender of the young ones is Nathan van Staden. Nathan is arguably Bojanala’s best u/10 player. It does not stop with Nathan though as opponents will still need to work their way up through some top-notch players like Louis Green, Heinrich Marx and only then do you get to Parkies’ top senior player, Leroux ‘The Boss’ Byliefeldt. Leroux has in recent months been beating some senior school players with ease. Proteapark are definite favourites to win the Clash of Schools junior sections.

  • Lebone II College of the Royal Bafokeng

Lebone College, known as the ‘Blue Army’ in school chess, is the biggest chess school in Bojanala. Not only do they have numbers, but they have enough quality to boast with.

Their senior player, Thatego Lefyedi is currently playing in the World School Chess Championships 2022. They also have Motheo Petlele in their team. Motheo represented South Africa in the 2021 Africa Schools Individual Chess Championships.

  • Laerskool Rustenburg

Larries is very proud of the man who will lead their team. He’s the pride of Larries and a trotse Larrie named Douglas Morkel. Douglas’ number of honour badges just confirm that he performs exceptionally in everything he participates in. With a rating north of 1,000, chess is no different for him.
