Rockfall fatality at Rustenburg’s Impala 20 Shaft
Rustenburg – A rockfall incident at Impala Platinum’s 20 shaft, in Rustenburg, on Wednesday, 18 January 2017, claimed the life of one mineworker and injured another.
“Our deepest sympathies go out to the Mpengesi family and friends,” Nelson Ndlala, executive head of the Rustenburg Operations, said.
Mr Zolile Mpengesi was struck by a rock which dislodged from the sidewalk at the tip area of 23012 on 23 level. It is reported that Mpengesi was busy barring the sidewall when the rock dislodged. He sustained crush injuries to the pelvis, lumbar spine and lower abdomen.
Mpengesi, originally from the Eastern Cape, was 44-years old and has been working at Impala as a miner for the past five years. His family resides in Meriteng, Rustenburg. He is survived by his wife Nosiphe and three children.
