SAPS clamp down on local grocer
Rustenburg – A joint operation on Tuesday, 17 January 2017, between the SAPS Highway Patrol, the Department of Immigration and Labour and the Police resulted in numerous arrests, Captain Elsabé Augoustides, police spokesperson, reported.
They clamped down on a local grocer after information was received of undocumented persons being employed at the grocer.
The management cooperated and agreed that credentials be checked. A total of 49 workers were brought before Home Affairs for verification of passports and working permits. Of the 49, 10 were found to be authentic.
“Nineteen (19) females and twenty (20) males were arrested,” Captain Augoustides confirmed. One of the females is expecting – the authorities are still deciding whether she must be deported. The arrested individuals hail from Zimbabwe, Nigeria and Malawi.
