North West – Three suspects, aged 39, 40 and 42, appeared before the Bray Periodical Court for rhino poaching on Tuesday, 24 January 2017. 

“The suspects’ court appearance follows their arrest on Sunday, 22 January 2017, at a private game farm in Mokopong, in the North West Province,” Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone, police spokesperson, said. 

According to information available at this stage, the Police were summoned to the game farm after a slaughtered rhino, of which two horns had been removed, was found. The Police and game rangers tracked the suspects which resulted in the arrest of three male suspects. The three Mozambican nationals were found in the possession of a rifle and two rhino horns.

Police investigations continue. The North West Provincial Commissioner, lieutenant general Baile Motswenyane commended the police and game rangers for their teamwork that led to the arrest of the suspects. 

  • In an unrelated case, the Lehurutshe Police, also in the North West Province, are investigating a rhino poaching case. Five Rhinos were killed and dehorned on Sunday, 22 January 2017
