Public Works working in public? [Letter to the editor]
22 February 2021
Rustenburg – For over a year now, the Expanded Public Works Programme have been dropping off teams of workers to clean up the canal in Buiten Street, almost daily. Groups of up to a 100 people then spend most of the morning lying under the trees, doing each other’s hair, and walking around while about 10% at least pretend to be working. The worst part is that their main job is to clean to canal – but after cutting the long grass in the area, it is just thrown back into the canal. With just the slightest bit of rain, the canal spills over the road – even with scores of people working almost daily to ‘clean’ it. The smell is just the worst as I suspect there is so much waste in the canal and some of it definitely includes a few dead animals.
