Cleaner streets, safer spaces

The team cleaned and cleared the route from Geelhout and Wildevy avenues towards the Rustenburg Recreation Centre and Montengulu on Wednesday, 9 September.
Our Ward Matters tackles overgrowth, illegal advertising and neglected public spaces across Rustenburg
Platinum Weekly newspaper | Rustenburg – Our Ward Matters (OWM) continued its work across Rustenburg, addressing overgrown vegetation, litter, illegal dumping and public-safety concerns while encouraging residents to take pride in their surroundings.
Founded by Ward 15 councillor André van Dyk and led by Cllr Van Dyk and Cllr Tanya Rothman, the initiative remains active in Wards 15, 16 and 17.
Clearing the way to safer neighbourhoods
On Monday 7 September 2026, Cllr Tanya Rothman led the team in cutting back overgrown vegetation between the Impala Park and Springbok Park complexes. Clearing dense bushes improves visibility, discourages criminal activity and reduces the risk of veld fires. On Tuesday, the team removed illegally displayed advertisements – commonly called ‘boomsloping’ – from trees, poles and public spaces in the Rivers area.
Cleaning today, preventing tomorrow’s problems
On Wednesday 9 September, OWM cleaned the route from Geelhout and Wildevy avenues towards the Rustenburg Recreation Centre and Montengulu. The team cut grass, collected litter and removed dead branches from the road. Deteriorating road sections and damaged signs were also identified and will be reported to the municipality. “We cannot fix everything ourselves, but where we can make a difference, we will,” the team said.
Maintenance that protects
On Thursday 10 September, near Bergsig, along Helen Joseph Avenue towards Kock Street, the team removed weeds, grass and accumulated sand from the traffic island. Another team cut back the veld in Kameelboom Avenue, opposite Wendy House Pre-School. This improves visibility and safety while reducing the risk of veld fires near the school and surrounding homes.
Cllr André van Dyk, Cllr Tanya Rothman, Ilse du Preez and the OWM team thanked the Rustenburg Local Municipality’s Waste Department and everyone who supported the week’s work.
