Cold start, warm hearts at Spring Cycle and Fun Run

Platinum Weekly newspaper | Rustenburg – Neither cold, wind nor muddy trails could dampen the community spirit at the annual Lighthouse Spring Cycle and Fun Run, held at Brauhaus Afrika on Saturday, 5 September 2026. Following a stormy night of heavy rain and strong winds, athletes arrived to a bitterly cold morning. Gusts battered tents, gazebos and banners, but more than 350 enthusiastic participants were ready when the fun run started at 07:00.
The cyclists set off at 08:30 to tackle the 5km, 8km and 16km routes. Puddles from the previous evening’s downpour added an extra challenge – and plenty of muddy fun – along the single-track sections.
Although the cycling event was intended as a social ride, several competitive cyclists could not resist pushing the pace. Wiehan van der Merwe was the first rider home in the 16km event, followed by Scott Williamse and Chris Petersen.
The organisers thanked everyone who supported this worthwhile community project, including the sponsors, spectators and members of the Rustenburg Cycling Club. After braving the chilly conditions, participants warmed up with hot beverages and enjoyed the welcoming atmosphere at Brauhaus Afrika.
