Turning “someone should” into “we will”

The Our Ward Matters clean-up on Tuesday 22 September focused on the tennis courts at Mopanie and Maroela Avenue and the surrounding area.
Our Ward Matters clears overgrowth, tackles litter and calls on residents to help Rustenburg shine
Platinum Weekly newspaper | Rustenburg – Cleaner streets and safer surroundings start with people willing to roll up their sleeves.
Our Ward Matters (OWM) is doing just that, clearing overgrown vegetation, collecting litter and encouraging residents to take pride in their neighbourhoods.
Founded by Ward 15 councillor André van Dyk and led by him and councillor Tanya Rothman, the initiative remains active in Wards 15, 16 and 17.
A cleaner court, a safer corner
On Tuesday 22 September 2026, the team tackled the tennis courts at the corner of Mopanie and Maroela Avenue, collecting rubbish around the courts, in the nearby open space and around Kruger Bridge. Brush cutters were used to clear the veld, improving visibility for residents and tennis-court users. Team members also removed grass encroaching onto the road with spades before using a blower to clear the area.
The clean-up brought together Van Dyk, Rothman, Ilse du Preez, the OWM team and the Rustenburg Local Municipality Waste Department – proof that small actions can make a visible difference.
Spades out in Protea Park
On Monday 28 September, the team started at Engen Protea Park and Wildevy, removing grass and weeds growing into the road and cleaning around the post boxes. They then moved to Moepel Avenue to clear pavements and parking areas with spades. Litter was collected and the open veld near the substation was cleaned, while two team members used brush cutters to tackle overgrowth.
OWM also raised concerns about people opening rubbish bags to collect bottles for resale, as well as begging and public drinking in the area.
Residents can help develop the gardens at Wildevy and Kruger by donating large stones, succulents and aloes, or lending a hand with planting. Rubbish bags, petrol for brush cutters and other useful donations are also welcome.
