Platinum Weekly newspaper | Rustenburg – A cash-in-transit van and its escort vehicle came under gunfire during an armed robbery at approximately 17:40 on Thursday 3 September 2026, leaving at least one person wounded.

North West Hawks spokesperson, warrant officer Amogelang Malwetse, confirmed that the attack was reported along the N4, between the Petro Port filling station and the Mooinooi off-ramp.

According to Malwetse, an unknown number of suspects intercepted the cash delivery van and opened fire. One person travelling in the escort vehicle was shot in the leg and rushed to hospital for medical attention. The suspects allegedly robbed security officials of two rifles and two pistols before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of cash.

A separate SAPS report describes more than ten suspects travelling in a Mercedes-Benz sedan, a BMW sedan and a Toyota bakkie. According to that account, the attackers fired at both vehicles, injured occupants of the escort vehicle and forcibly removed the occupants of the cash van before using explosives on it. The SAPS report further states that one of the suspects’ vehicles collided with a civilian vehicle, injuring a civilian.

The Rustenburg-based Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit is investigating. No arrests had been made.
