Panga robber strikes as Rustenburg businesses open

Platinum Weekly newspaper | Rustenburg – Pepper spray, a large panga and threats for cash turned an early morning at a Rustenburg business into a frightening ordeal on Wednesday 21 October 2026.

Outdoor Arena Security (OAS) responded to an armed business robbery in Protea Park before receiving information about a second robbery in Bo-Dorp.

According to its community alert, both incidents occurred between 06:00 and 06:30. OAS said CCTV footage from one of the businesses showed a lone man entering, spraying a shop assistant in the eyes with pepper spray and producing a panga. He demanded cash before moving behind the counter and swinging the weapon towards the employee, who retreated into a corner. The robber fled with cash and cellular phones. The suspect is believed to have travelled in a white or silver sedan resembling a Toyota Corolla, reportedly without number plates. Distinguishing features include a badly damaged windscreen and a black front wheel. OAS thanked SAPS officers for responding promptly, but said the aftermath also exposed the financial pressure robbery victims face. According to OAS, one shop owner was asked to keep the premises closed pending forensic examination and fingerprint collection. With no clear timeframe provided, the owner reportedly withdrew the case rather than risk further lost income. OAS called for improved coordination and faster forensic responses to help preserve evidence while limiting the financial burden on small businesses.

Residents and business owners are urged to remain vigilant.

Do not confront the suspect if spotted. Report information to SAPS or the OAS 24-hour control room on 071 741 1272.

OAS said information would be treated confidentially.
