NWU mining school: A chance to build Rustenburg’s future

Prof. Bismark Tyobeka, NWU principal and vice-chancellor, is calling for partnerships to help realise the proposed School of Mines and Mining Engineering in Rustenburg.

Platinum Weekly newspaper | Rustenburg – When Platinum Weekly first reported on plans for a North-West University (NWU) School of Mines and Mining Engineering in Rustenburg in August 2025, it was exciting news. The prospect holds enormous promise for our city, bringing opportunities for education, skills development and economic growth closer to home. Now, NWU principal and vice-chancellor Prof. Bismark Tyobeka is calling on businesses, government and communities to help turn that ambition into a lasting institution. In his latest appeal, Tyobeka explains that mining engineering could anchor a much broader university presence in Rustenburg. The vision includes opportunities for healthcare training, business education, short courses and support for local entrepreneurs. Locally accessible training could help mineworkers, artisans, supervisors and managers advance their careers, while university expertise could assist emerging businesses in the mining supply chain. Tyobeka also highlights the proposed tertiary hospital in Bojanala as a potential platform for nursing and clinical training, subject to the necessary agreements and approvals. Realising this vision will require shared investment. Mining houses, equipment suppliers, banks and other businesses are invited to contribute bursaries, equipment, expertise, research partnerships or commitments to employee training. Tyobeka proposes a founding partnership forum to agree on priorities, costs and a phased development plan. For Rustenburg, the promise reaches beyond mining: it is an opportunity to turn the region’s mineral wealth into skills, livelihoods and opportunities for generations to come.
