Rustenburg – Two people were fortunate to escape with their lives after they were shot by armed men in a failed hijacking on Saturday 3 August.

The incident occurred along the R104 near Samancor Mine at around 12:30.

Rustenburg police spokesperson captain Elsabé Augoustides told the Platinum Weekly that the two were sitting in a Toyota Corolla when they were approached by the armed hijackers.“The assailant pointed a gun at the victims and ordered them to get out. They refused and sped off instead to which the gun men opened fire. The driver of the car was shot in the hand while the passenger was injured in the foot. They drove into Samancor mine where they were assisted by the security guards and the police were contacted.” Elsabé said.
