Rustenburg – A protest along the R24 caused massive traffic delays after motorists were prevented from using the busy road.

Protestors, who blocked the road during the early hours of Monday 23 January 2023, vented out their anger after scores of Naauwpoort Secondary School learners could not attend school because of transport challenges.

“Everyone had to use the Rex/Oorsaak and R104 roads and this caused traffic delays of up to two hours,” said Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor Jean Keyser, “The protesters were upset because approximately 400 school children were being transported to school and back using only three buses.

This was not feasible and many of the learners were travelling about 20km to school and back.”
The protestors were eventually dispersed, and traffic flow restored following intervention from the Rustenburg Department of Public Safety.

A meeting between the community, school authorities and other stakeholders was held to find a solution that is still to be confirmed. Keyser mentioned that further discussions with the school’s principal are still underway.

Only three buses were transporting 400 learners to and from Naauwpoort Secondary School.
