Tragic loss: ANC ward councillor Poppy Morapedi shot and killed  

Rustenburg – The Rustenburg community is reeling from the tragic loss of African National Congress (ANC) ward councillor Poppy Morapedi, who was fatally shot on Friday 26 April 2024, around 21:00. Born on 4 February 1971 and raised in Photsaneng, Morapedi, 54, dedicated her life to serving her community. Her untimely death has left a void in the hearts of many. Her funeral is scheduled for Saturday 4 May 2024. Expressing their grief, Morapedi’s brother, Abram Morapedi, said, “May her wonderful soul rest in peace. We have lost one of ours. We will miss her so much. She meant so much to us and did us so proud.”

She is survived by her two sons and two daughters. Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone reported that the Rustenburg police have launched a manhunt following the murder. The incident occurred as Morapedi and her cousin were walking home from a shop. They were approached by four unknown men, one of whom fired two shots at Morapedi, fatally injuring her. Her cousin ran into the yard and screamed for help, prompting Morapedi’s brother to rush out and spot the suspects fleeing in a BMW.

Morapedi was shot below the left ear and forehead and was declared dead by emergency and medical services on scene. The motive for the attack is yet to be established, and investigations are ongoing. No arrests have been made. This tragic event is a grim reminder of the dangers faced by councillors. Morapedi is not the first RLM councillor to be shot and killed in Rustenburg. The community mourns the loss of a dedicated leader and extends its deepest condolences to Morapedi’s family and loved ones.
