Rustenburg – Two employees from CDR Technical Services, a company contracted by the Rustenburg Local Municipality (RLM), were accidentally electrocuted while working at the Industries Substation in Zinniaville, on Monday afternoon, 24 February 2025.

The incident occurred during routine cable testing at the substation, a critical hub supplying power to large parts of Rustenburg.

Emergency responders, including Rustenburg Emergency and Disaster Management, Netcare, Med24, Trauma Rescue, and Bojanala EMS, rushed to the scene. The injured workers were transported to Ferncrest Hospital and Life Peglerae Hospital for urgent medical care.

Eagle Trauma Rescue operational manager, Hennie Madely, confirmed the severity of their injuries. “Two men sustained burn injuries. One suffered burns over 80% of his body, while the other sustained 20% burn wounds. Both were transported for further medical treatment.”

In response to the incident, DA Ward 43 Councillor Luan Snyders emphasised the importance of maintaining Rustenburg’s electrical infrastructure. “The DA remains committed to holding Rustenburg LM accountable to ensure that essential maintenance on electrical and critical municipal infrastructure is carried out. The Industries Substation is crucial to our network, and failure to upgrade it could lead to further safety risks and service disruptions.”

Snyders also stressed the importance of workplace safety. “It is crucial to prioritise the health and safety of both employees and contractors by ensuring that regular toolbox talks, and safety measures are consistently implemented. Our thoughts are with the injured individuals, and we wish them a swift and full recovery.”

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
