Rustenburg/ Geelhout Gardens – Residents have raised concerns about an informal business that recently appeared next to Geelhout Gardens.

Platinum Weekly was alerted by a community member who felt uneasy about the operation being established in the heart of a residential area. On visiting the site, we found around five individuals working from a small patch of land next to the Gardens’ parking area.

The group appears to be sorting selected types of waste for resale and chopping wood, although it remains unclear where the wood is sourced. While their efforts show determination to earn an income, the activity has created mixed feelings among neighbours. Some describe the set-up as untidy and out of place in a well-maintained part of town.

Security guards at the old age home, situated directly across the street, reported that the group is not only conducting business by day but also sleeping on the premises at night. This has given rise to concerns that the area could develop into an informal settlement.

Despite this, both residents and security personnel stated that they have not noticed an increase in crime since the group arrived. The individuals have also been seen collecting water from the old age home.

This situation highlights a delicate balance between compassion for people trying to make an honest living and the legalities of unlicensed businesses, squatting, and the use of private property without consent.
