Platinum Weekly newspaper | Rustenburg – Two men were tragically killed during a lightning strike on Monday, 24 November 2025. Residents who witnessed the aftermath described a scene of disbelief as emergency services arrived to assess what had unfolded in an open field during the storm.

According to Rustenburg South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Sergeant Ofentse Mokgadi, “We can confirm that two African males were found dead in an open space in Ikemeleng, Kroondal. The circumstances surrounding their deaths are unknown at this stage, and the police have registered an inquest docket,”

Although lightning strikes are not uncommon during the region’s fierce summer storms, authorities urge the public to take shelter during thunderstorms, avoid open fields, and stay clear of tall trees or metal objects that may attract lightning.
