Platinum Weekly newspaper | Rustenburg – On 9 January 2026, Bakwena Platinum Corridor Concessionaire has warned motorists to be extra vigilant when driving at night following a worrying increase in vehicle spiking incidents.

Vehicle spiking involves sharp objects being placed on roadways to damage tyres, often forcing drivers to stop and leaving them vulnerable to further crime. Bakwena has urged all road users, particularly those travelling after dark, to remain alert and cautious.

In response to the incidents, Bakwena says it is working closely with authorities through Road Incident Management System forums. This includes cooperation with the South African Police Service, Metropolitan Police, and Provincial Traffic Authorities to support investigations and deploy additional resources aimed at reducing these dangerous acts.

Safety tips for motorists include:

  • Avoid night-time travel where possible
  • Be on the lookout for suspicious objects or debris on the road
  • If you suspect your vehicle has been spiked, do not stop in an isolated area — proceed carefully to a safe, well-lit location and seek help
