
A Morning of Loss at Sunrise Bridge
Platinum Weekly newspaper | Rustenburg – A tragic drowning incident claimed the life of a 37-year-old man at Sunrise Bridge on Wednesday morning, 28 January 2026.
At approximately 09:00, Rustenburg First Responders were dispatched to the scene after receiving reports of a person who had drowned in the river and required urgent assistance. Multiple emergency and rescue services responded swiftly, including ER24, North West Provincial EMS, Boitekong SAPS, Search and Rescue teams, Fire and Rescue Services, as well as a specialised diving team. On arrival, emergency personnel worked together in a coordinated rescue effort. The patient was successfully recovered from the water; however, despite all lifesaving attempts, he was tragically declared deceased at the scene.
Rustenburg First Responders administrator Ammaar Wadee said: “Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones affected by this tragic incident.”
According to sergeant Ofentse Mokgadi, an inquest docket has been opened for investigation. “It is alleged that the 37-year-old victim was swimming in the company of a friend when he reportedly drowned,” Mokgadi stated.
