A rising star
Rustenburg - In an interview on Friday, 9 October 2023, Platinum Weekly caught up with Reatlegile Taukobong, a Grade 10 learner at Fields College and a basketball talent to be reckoned with.
Reatlegile, known affectionately as ‘Rea’, has quickly risen to become one of Africa’s most promising young female basketball players. With unwavering support from her family, dedicated coaches, and the Royal Bafokeng Sports programme, her career has been propelled in an exciting direction.
Rea’s journey has taken her to various corners of the globe, making stops in Senegal, Atlanta USA, and most recently, Rwanda. Throughout these travels, Rea has consistently represented her country and the entire continent with exceptional skill and grace.
Recently, Rea represented the Royal Bafokeng Jr.NBA at the FIBA Africa Regional Youth Camp for Girls in Kigali, Rwanda from 26 to 28 September 2023.
A significant highlight of Rea’s time in Rwanda was her selection as an all-star player among other talented girls from across Africa. This select group is now part of a newly formed all-star team, opening doors to exciting international opportunities.
Speaking about her journey, Rea emphasised how international exposure has heightened her basketball IQ, enabling her to make better decisions while playing. She believes that her extensive training and the inspiration she draws from watching great basketball games have been pivotal in her development.
One aspect of her journey that Rea cherishes deeply is the ability to connect with people from around the world through the universal language of basketball. She expressed gratitude for her teammates and coach, acknowledging that her success is a product of collective effort and shared learning experiences.
