Buffelspoort Dam under new management

Buffelspoort – Buffelspoort Dam is a unique asset to the North West Province. It is one of the few dams in the country which remains in a relatively pristine state, and continues to have great recreational potential.

The new management team at the dam consists of community members, local farmers and landowners who have volunteered to assist with the management and conservation of the dam and its immediate surrounds. 

This Community Committee was democratically elected from the local community to manage Buffelspoort Dam on a voluntary basis. 

“Our vision is to add value to our community through the commitment to effectively manage our resources,” said committee member Alex Junod.

Specifically, they would like to administer and improve the recreational, public access area on the western shore of the dam. This can, in turn, directly benefit the communities surrounding it.

Community member Janine Horn said: “It is our firm belief that, as a community, it is our responsibility to manage Buffelspoort Dam in the interests of all parties and with a strong conservation ethic in mind.

Collectively we have an ardent, multi-faceted vision for the dam. We believe that we are best suited to manage the area in question as we do not represent any single party but rather a number of parties with varied skills, interests and concerns.”

This venture does come with challenges, but the committee is dedicated to finding solutions. Committee member Jessica van Schalkwyk added: “We are aware that there has been some negative feedback from visitors recently to Buffelspoort Dam. We are addressing these comments and want to assure you that we are doing everything possible to make your future visits to Buffelspoort Dam, peaceful, fun-filled and memorable experiences.”

They welcome anyone that would like to make a difference and be a part of the conservation of this beautiful dam.
