North West – Rustenburg shines in the 2023 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination results, as announced by the Education MEC, Ntsetsao Viola Motsumi, at Sun City on Friday 19 January 2024. 

The North West province proudly secured the fourth position nationally, showcasing a notable pass rate of 81.63%, marking a significant increase from the previous year’s 79.8%.

The province observed a noteworthy increase in Bachelor passes, with a total of 15,059 students (36.36%) achieving this milestone, compared to 14,733 (33.62%) in 2022. Diploma passes also saw a positive trend, reaching 11,646 (28.12%), an improvement from the previous 10,794 (26.3%). In a pursuit of quality, the number of Higher Certificate passes slightly decreased to 7,089 (17.11%), from 7,470 (18.2%) in 2022.

Highlighting the achievements of Special Needs Schools, seven candidates successfully passed with an Endorsed NSC. Remarkably, North West Secondary School for the Deaf experienced a significant turnaround, jumping from a 0% pass rate in 2022 to an impressive 66% in 2023.

The province celebrated its top achiever, Wian Landman from Potchefstroom Gimnasium, who earned six distinctions and an impressive score of 1699 marks across all subjects.

The best-performing local education offices were also acknowledged, with JB Marks leading at 87.10%, followed closely by Rustenburg at 86.05%, and Kagisano Molopo at 85.99%.

In terms of schools with the highest number of subject distinctions (excluding Life Orientation), Potchefstroom Gimnasium claimed the top spot with 301 distinctions, followed by Rustenburg High School with 308, and Wesvalia High School with 203.

Furthermore, Rustenburg High School stood out with 220 of its 301 candidates qualifying for degree studies. Additionally, Schoonspruit High School in Matlosana and Fields College in Rustenburg each had all 134 candidates passing, showcasing 100% success rates.

The commendable results are a testament to the hard work and dedication of the learners, teachers, school governing bodies, headmasters, and parents. The North West’s achievement in the 2023 NSC examinations highlights the region’s commitment to educational excellence and sets a positive trajectory for future academic endeavours.
