Matzonox Fires Back
“We’re Compliant and Transparent”
Zinniaville, Rustenburg – Amid community concern and public outcry over the Matzonox biogas facility’s atmospheric emissions licence renewal, Rainbow Chicken has stepped forward to clarify key facts, defending the plant’s compliance, purpose, and public engagement process.
Following the Platinum Weekly’s recent article outlining concerns from the Zinniaville Ratepayers Association (ZRA), Rainbow Chicken – now the primary company involved in Matzonox – shared its side of the story, affirming that the facility does currently hold a valid Atmospheric Emissions Licence (AEL), and is undergoing a renewal process in full compliance with environmental regulations.
“We’re committed to transparency, compliance, and genuine community engagement,” Rainbow Chicken said. “This is not a first-time application, but a standard renewal, and we’ve taken additional steps to ensure every concern is heard.”
About the plant
The Rustenburg-based Matzonox facility, one of only two such biogas-to-energy plants in South Africa, converts organic waste into renewable energy. According to Rainbow Chicken, it significantly reduces demand on Eskom’s grid and local water infrastructure – boasting a 50% reduction in municipal water usage through advanced water recycling technology.
Community concerns and ZRA’s objections
Local residents and the ZRA had alleged that Matzonox previously operated without proper licensing and posed health and environmental risks due to foul odours and proximity to homes. In response, Rainbow Chicken stated that all operations currently run under appropriate licences and that specific activities under review were proactively paused until fully verified.
Engagement ongoing until 19 July 2025
Rainbow Chicken emphasised that this is the second round of public participation. All stakeholders, including ward councillors and residents, were formally notified and invited to share input by 19 July 2025. Notices have been published and placed on-site to ensure visibility.
Rainbow Chicken says it aims to gather all feedback in a transparent public participation report, which will be submitted to the Bojanala District Municipality’s Air Quality Officer – the designated oversight authority.
