Mandela Day Momentum: Homes Delivered, Taverns Closed
Rustenburg – In the spirit of Mandela Day and its call for 67 minutes of service, the Rustenburg Local Municipality intensified its ongoing commitment to public safety and social upliftment with a flurry of impactful activities across the city this past week.
Executive Mayor Cllr Sheila Mabale-Huma led from the front, personally handing over newly built houses to two grateful families in Thekwane (Ward 45) and Tantanana (Ward 26) villages.
Municipal councillors, Members of the Mayoral Committee, and staff joined forces in a day of action rooted in service. Their efforts formed part of two key programmes — the Safer City Campaign and City At Work — which have already been operational for over a month.
These initiatives aim to restore pride and order through visible service delivery, waste removal, community engagement, and the firm enforcement of municipal by-laws. One such action, which has sparked widespread public discussion, was a law enforcement raid on a local tavern on Friday, 18 July 2025. The tavern, allegedly operating as a hotspot for illegal activities including sex work, was shut down — leaving nearly 100 sex workers without a base of operation.
