Rustenburg – The Karlien Park Clinic is once again able to serve patients after electricity was restored last week, thanks to urgent action by the Democratic Alliance (DA).

During an oversight visit on 27 August 2025, DA councillor Luan Snyders discovered that the clinic had been left without electricity due to unpaid municipal bills. The Department of Health had allowed arrears to build up to a staggering R178,000, leaving staff and patients quite literally in the dark. Following engagements with the municipality, electricity was reconnected on Friday, 29 August. However, R119,000 in outstanding debt remains unpaid.

“Healthcare facilities must always remain functional, and bureaucratic negligence cannot be allowed to endanger lives,” Snyders stressed. The power cut had jeopardised critical healthcare services, especially for vulnerable residents who rely on the clinic for primary healthcare.

The DA has committed to following up with the Department of Health to ensure the bills are settled and that the clinic is never placed in this position again.
